Highlights

From painted turtles sunbathing in the pond to common yellowthroats watching from the branches above to the mountain laurel that can be found throughout the woods, the Mary Edwards property is full of surprises. You can hike through beautifully preserved stone walls, alongside a bubbling stream, and up to a view that looks across the Connecticut River Valley, providing an outstanding view of Springfield and the Mount Tom Range.

Featured Trail

Walk down through the field if you want to check out the pond before beginning your hike. Then, head up to the trailhead kiosk near the parking area to start the loop. Now you can start up the blue trail. Look immediately to your right for a chance to see the foundation of Willie Phelps’ old house. Then, you will see the Boy Scout monument on the right as the trail opens into a small clearing with a lone apple tree stationed in the middle. Continue past this spot to reach arguably the best view on the property, Springfield as seen from Mary’s Rock. This iconic glacial erratic boasts an incredible look out on the forests and rolling hills of Connecticut and Massachusetts with Springfield placed smack in the middle. Now, continuing back into the woods, you’ll want to take the path furthest to the right, identifiable by its blue trail marks. This area is steep, so watch your step, but keep an eye on the right side of the trail to see the first remnants of old stone walls. Soon, you will walk through a pristine example of a stone wall and take a left onto the green trail, the one that leads you through another section of wall. More stone walls will be visible around you until you meet back up with the main loop distinguished by yellow markings. Take a right here to continue on the yellow trail. Turn left before the bridge and enjoy a beautiful stream-side stroll as you make your way up Ring Brook with a front-row seat to some gorgeous little waterfalls. When you reach the next bridge, stay left to remain on the yellow blazes. Now you’ll be treated to an incredibly peaceful walk through the woods featuring some small stream crossings. When you get back to Mary’s Rock, return down the same way you came up to complete the loop. This gorgeous trail is 1.6 miles long and has about 350 feet of elevation gain.
