Property Location

The Katan-Ensor Preserve is located at 61 Strong Road (at the very end of the road) in West Granby. The Katan-Ensor Preserve serves as the entry point to several of the GLT’s Old Messenger Road Preserves, including the Schlicht Family and Richard P. Garmany Preserves.

Trailhead

To reach the Katan-Ensor Preserve, park in the lot on the hammerhead at 61 Strong Road (you will see the Katan-Ensor Preserve sign) and then walk up the dirt road by the old Katan Barn to the trailhead kiosk for the starting point for the blue and red trails.

Total Miles of Trails

The Katan-Ensor Preserve itself has about .75 miles of trail on the blue and red trails, but links to the yellow/orange trails offering another approximately 2 miles of hiking on the Schlicht Family and Richard P. Garmany Preserves.

Highlights

The Katan-Ensor Preserve is a mixture of open fields and woodlands with some beautiful natural features, ranging from interesting rock formations to a babbling brook that runs through the property.

Featured Trail

Starting from the Katan-Ensor Preserve kiosk, walk up the blue trail behind the kiosk (you will see two Adirondack chairs to the left) and then bear left to start you up an easy incline. As you reach the highest point of the blue trail, you will come across an outlook with a bench (views are open in the Winter and Spring; porcupines have been spotted enjoying a meal in these trees!). Continue to follow the blue trail down through a rock formation and across some seasonal waterways until you reach the intersection of the blue and red trail, proceed left on red trail and then bear right to stay on the outside red trail which will take you back across a bridge to the Katan-Ensor Preserve kiosk.
